Description

Quercetin is a bioflavonoid that helps control histamine production and also inhibits the action of adhesion molecules. The action of these molecules leads to inflammation commonly associated with an allergic reaction. Reducing histamine significantly reduces over-reactions to allergens.

Ailments / Situations Where Used

Any ailment involving excess histamine production can benefit from quercetin's antihistamine and antiallergenic properties. This includes environmental / seasonal / tree pollen allergies and hay fever.

Quercetin also has anti-inflammatory properties and is useful in treating asthma, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, common colds, flu, and sinusitis.

Quercetin blocks an enzyme that leads to sorbitol accumulation. As a result, it may reduce problems associated with diabetes, including diabetic cataracts, neuropathy (nerve damage), retinopathy (eye damage), and kidney damage.

Its antioxidant properties help prevent cardiovascular disease by protecting against LDL ("bad") cholesterol.

Source

Quercetin is found mostly in onions, with lower concentrations in apples and black tea. Smaller amounts can be found in leafy green vegetables and beans.

Optimal Absorption

Eat onions and apples regularly. If supplementing, take 250 to 400mg two to three times daily, before meals.

Take with vitamin C for optimal absorption.

H2O2

Description

Hydrogen peroxide is naturally produced in your body as a byproduct of the digestive process. This compound can be used to provide oxygen to your body, enhancing various functions. Oxygen is a vital gas that promotes proper cell function and speeds healing. Though hydrogen peroxide can have a very powerful effect on the body, the compound breaks down into oxygen and water, which are both used by all bodily systems.

Ailments / Situations Where Used

SPECIAL NOTES: Before using food grade hydrogen peroxide, be sure to read the Contraindications/ Precautions/ Warnings section below. It is also best to use this substance under the supervision of your naturopath or other health practitioner. Also, do not internally use 3% hydrogen peroxide from drug stores, as it contains highly toxic chemical stabilizers.

Hydrogen peroxide's disinfectant and antibacterial properties make it suitable for a number of topical applications. It can be used on acne, athlete's foot, cuts and scrapes, infected wounds, and psoriasis. You may also use it as a mouth wash. It may be taken internally to treat various bacterial, fungal, and viral infections. Hydrogen peroxide is also effective against Candida and parasites.

POST INTERNAL USE: You may require acidophilus and bifidus supplementation after using hydrogen peroxide to restore beneficial bacteria that were destroyed during the detoxification process.

Hydrogen peroxide is commonly used for detoxification. Thoroughly read this entire section before you begin. You may also supplement with activated charcoal slurry (1 teaspoon activated charcoal powder mixed in 1 cup/8 oz. purified or distilled water) 6 or more times daily. This will help adsorb eliminated toxins. Begin regimen 1/2 hour after taking hydrogen peroxide. For more information, see Activated Charcoal.

Optimal Absorption

3% Solution

35% food grade hydrogen peroxide must be diluted before use. The following preparation results in a more safe 3% solution. Mix 1 oz./30mL H2O2 with 11 oz./330mL purified or distilled water. If you require larger quantities, always dilute at a 1:11 ration of H2O2 to water.

This solution is commonly used for external applications. If using internally, drink solution on an empty stomach, one hour before or three hours after meals. Consult with your naturopath or other health practitioner for an appropriate dosage schedule. You may mix solution with milk, juice, distilled water, or any other non-alcoholic or non-carbonated beverage to make it more palatable.

Drop Method

The drop method is intended for internal uses of H2O2. Use full strength 35% food grade H2O2 added to purified or distilled water. Start with 3 drops H2O2 added to 6 oz./180mL of water. Take three times daily. Increase dosage by one drop for the following seven days, followed by an increase of two drops on Day 9 (12 drops, three times daily) until a maximum of twenty five drops has been reached (typically day 16).

NOTE: Do not exceed a total daily dosage of seventy five drops. If at any point you experience stomach upset, decrease your dosage to a comfortable level and increase water intake.

Once you have reached the maximum, reverse the dosage schedule by decreasing the number of drops daily over the next several weeks (25, 24, 22, 20, 18, et cetera). More serious conditions may require a persistent dosage of twenty five drops two to three times daily for one to three weeks before you begin to gradually taper dosage. Consult with your naturopath or other health practitioner to determine an appropriate dosage schedule.

A complete detoxification / elimination regimen takes from one to six months to complete. Be patient.

Maintenance dosage can range from five to fifteen drops per week, if required.

Household and Miscellaneous Uses

Hydrogen peroxide can be used in a wide variety of other applications.

NOTE: The majority of methods use a 3% solution. In most cases, you must dilute 35% hydrogen peroxide to this lower concentration before use!

Contraindications / Precautions / Warnings

As previously mentioned, do not internally use 3% hydrogen peroxide from drug stores as it contains highly toxic chemical stabilizers.

NEVER use hydrogen peroxide at full strength on or in your body. You must dilute the compound to solutions ranging from 0.5% - 3.0%. Follow the dilution instructions on the label, or use the "3% Solution" or "Drop Method" outlined in Optimal Absorption, above.

If you spill 35% hydrogen peroxide on your skin, immediately rinse under water. Your skin will burn and turn white. Use caution and avoid spills.

Remember that you may experience a number of side effects when using H2O2 for detoxification purposes. H2O2 causes a herxheimer reaction (temporary increase in symptoms) in the presence of viruses or bacteria, affecting the eliminative organs of the body (skin, lungs, kidneys, and bowels). This may result in boils, colds (head or chest), diarrhea, ear infections, infections, nausea, skin eruptions, sleepiness, and unusual fatigue. These are natural toxin elimination processes and are usually of short duration. If symptoms become severe, see your naturopath or other health practitioner. A number of people who have taken H2O2 have cut short their cleansing process in the face of these reactions, hindering the cleansing process. Continue use only as long as you are comfortable and feel in control of the process.

PS

Description

Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a type of phospholipid and is an essential component of cell membranes. Cell membranes are composed of a double layer of lipid molecules (primarily phospholipids) in which enzymes and other proteins are embedded. As PS is also a phospholipid, it is well suited to support enzymes and proteins in nerve cell membranes. By strengthening and revitalizing the membranes that surround brain cells, PS also improves nutrient flow into the cells, providing them with the food they need to function properly. This, in turn, promotes overall brain function.

PS activates and regulates proteins involved in proper nerve cell function, including the generation, transmission, reception, and storage of nerve impulses. Unlike many pharmaceutical drugs that raise or lower single chemical transmitters, PS supports multiple major transmitter systems, promoting overall brain function.

PS is naturally present in the brain and is synthesized from phospholipid building blocks. This nutrient is highly bioavailable (easily absorbed by the body) and is able to breach the blood-brain barrier to exert its positive influence on the brain. Once inside nerve cell membranes, PS also acts as a storehouse for phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) -- similar phospholipids also present in cell membranes.

Ailments / Situations Where Used

By supporting nerve cell membranes and their various functions, phosphatidylserine may assist in maintaining or improving general brain function, including memory, learning, and concentration functions. Research has shown that this nutrient is particularly beneficial for adults of fifty years of age and older.

This nutrient's effect on cognitive function -- including short term item recall (names, dates, phone numbers, et cetera) -- adaptability, and mood sociability make PS supplementation suitable for people with Alzheimer's disease. PS may slow the rate of deterioration, but will not prevent the progression of Alzheimer's. A number of studies recommend supplementation with this nutrient as early as possible if used to treat the onset of Alzheimer's.

As with vitamin E and Coenzyme Q10, phosphatidylserine promotes energy use in the brain by supporting mitochondria activity in cells, responsible for ATP (energy) production. Your brain uses 20% of total body energy when at rest and up to 60% when engaged in challenging mental work. This helps explain why you feel hungry after studying all day or working on finalizing that key presentation!

PS has also been used to treat depression and stress by supporting proper nervous system function.

Source

Phosphatidylserine is produced internally in the body from phospholipid building blocks. It is present in trace amounts in rice, soy, and green leafy vegetables. Small amounts are also present in lecithin.

Synthesized PS is primarily derived from soy but has been sourced from bovine (cow) brain tissue in the past. Animal derived PS is quite rare today. Nevertheless, vegetarians and vegans who choose to supplement with PS should ensure their preparation is derived from a vegetable source.

Optimal Absorption

If supplementing, take 100 - 200mg twice daily.

Complementary vitamins include Vitamin E and Coenzyme Q10.

Description

Epsom salt is a pure mineral product composed of magnesium sulfate. Not only is it useful for aches, and pains and cosmetic uses, magnesium sulfate is required for the survival and growth of plants. As a result, it can also be used in the garden to increase chlorophyll content and prevent weak stalks and yellow leaves.

Ailments / Situations Where Used

Epsom salts help reduce muscular aches and swelling, and makes for a great post-workout soak. An epsom salt bath is also an excellent way to relieve stress.

The salts can also be used to help relieve the "sting" and reduce the swelling of insect bites. The drawing action of epsom salts draws toxins and sweat away from pores and helps bring splinters to the skin's surface for easier removal.

Its cleansing and exfoliating properties make epsom salts useful to soften rough patches of skin anywhere on the body. It is particularly good as a foot soak. The salts can also help dislodge blackheads, treat oily hair, remove hairspray and gel buildup, and add body to hair.

Preparations

To relieve stress or reduce the swelling and muscular pains, add two cups of epsom salt to a warm bath and soak for thirty minutes.

Used as a foot soak, epsom salts ease aching feet, soften rough skin, and absorb odours.

A warm compress of epsom salts is good for clearing pores, reducing swelling from insect bites, and removing splinters.

A cold epsom salt compress is used for relieving the sting of insect bites.

To cleanse and exfoliate your skin and soften rough patches, massage a handful of epsom salts over wet skin. Next, pour two cups into a warm bath and soak for thirty minutes.

To dislodge blackheads, mix 1 tsp. epsom salts, 3 drops iodine, and 1/2 cup boiling water. Allow the mixture to cool a bit. Next, apply to problem area with a cotton swab. Repeat 3 to 4 times, re-heating the mixture if necessary. Then gently unclog pore and go over the area with an astringent.

To treat oily hair, first mix 9 tablespoons epsom salts with 1/2 cup of liquid shampoo for oily hair. Massage 1 tablespoon. of this mixture into dry hair and rinse with cold water. Then, mix the juice of one lemon with a cup of lukewarm water. Pour this mixture on your hair and leave in for 10 minutes. Rinse with cool water.

To remove hairspray and gel buildup, mix 4 litres distilled water with 1 cup fresh lemon juice and 1 cup epsom salts. Cover and let sit for 24 hours. Pour the mixture into dry hair and leave in for 20 minutes. Then shampoo as normal.

To add body to hair or to restore curl to permed hair, mix 3 tablespoons of deep conditioner with 3 tablespoons of epsom salts and microwave for 20 - 30 seconds. Massage the warm mixture through your hair from scalp to tips, and leave in for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water.
