Epsom salt is a pure mineral product composed of magnesium sulfate. Not only is it useful for aches, and pains and cosmetic uses, magnesium sulfate is required for the survival and growth of plants. As a result, it can also be used in the garden to increase chlorophyll content and prevent weak stalks and yellow leaves.


Ailments / Situations Where Used

Epsom salts help reduce muscular aches and swelling, and makes for a great post-workout soak. An epsom salt bath is also an excellent way to relieve stress.

The salts can also be used to help relieve the "sting" and reduce the swelling of insect bites. The drawing action of epsom salts draws toxins and sweat away from pores and helps bring splinters to the skin's surface for easier removal.

Its cleansing and exfoliating properties make epsom salts useful to soften rough patches of skin anywhere on the body. It is particularly good as a foot soak. The salts can also help dislodge blackheads, treat oily hair, remove hairspray and gel buildup, and add body to hair.



Magnesium Sulfate


To relieve stress or reduce the swelling and muscular pains, add two cups of epsom salt to a warm bath and soak for thirty minutes.

Used as a foot soak, epsom salts ease aching feet, soften rough skin, and absorb odours.

A warm compress of epsom salts is good for clearing pores, reducing swelling from insect bites, and removing splinters.

A cold epsom salt compress is used for relieving the sting of insect bites.

To cleanse and exfoliate your skin and soften rough patches, massage a handful of epsom salts over wet skin. Next, pour two cups into a warm bath and soak for thirty minutes.

To dislodge blackheads, mix 1 tsp. epsom salts, 3 drops iodine, and 1/2 cup boiling water. Allow the mixture to cool a bit. Next, apply to problem area with a cotton swab. Repeat 3 to 4 times, re-heating the mixture if necessary. Then gently unclog pore and go over the area with an astringent.

To treat oily hair, first mix 9 tablespoons epsom salts with 1/2 cup of liquid shampoo for oily hair. Massage 1 tablespoon. of this mixture into dry hair and rinse with cold water. Then, mix the juice of one lemon with a cup of lukewarm water. Pour this mixture on your hair and leave in for 10 minutes. Rinse with cool water.

To remove hairspray and gel buildup, mix 4 litres distilled water with 1 cup fresh lemon juice and 1 cup epsom salts. Cover and let sit for 24 hours. Pour the mixture into dry hair and leave in for 20 minutes. Then shampoo as normal.

To add body to hair or to restore curl to permed hair, mix 3 tablespoons of deep conditioner with 3 tablespoons of epsom salts and microwave for 20 - 30 seconds. Massage the warm mixture through your hair from scalp to tips, and leave in for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water.
