Amino Acids

Amino acid complex is needed for tissue repair. The free-form amino acids are recommended for enhanced absorption. Take as directed on the label.

L-Lysine may be helpful in preventing herpes eruptions from occurring. The effects are enhanced when there is a reduced intake of arginine in the diet (see Foods, below). Lysine has also been found to have anti-viral properties. Ideal sources of lysine include amaranth, cheese, chicken, eggs, fish, lima beans, milk, red meat, potatoes, soy, yeast, and all protein-rich foods. Lysine is also found as part of a multi-amino acid complex and protein powder supplements. Depending on the country in which you live, lysine may also be available as an isolated supplement in capsule or tablet form. You may require a prescription.

Bergamot has an affinity for the urogenital system; however, the essential oils of Eucalyptus and Tea Tree are very effective in treating the blisters that result from the herpes virus, particularly if applied immediately at the first sign of an eruption. If there are blisters, diluted lavender oil may be used to promote healing. It is important to dilute the oils greatly.

An alcohol preparation may be used to dilute the oils: add no more than 6 drops essential oils to 5mL alcohol. This solution may then be dabbed on the affected area. Also note that genital herpes are more likely to erupt when you are under stress, so massages and baths with distressing and antidepressant essential oils can help.

Garlic has antibacterial and antiviral properties as a result of its incredibly complex molecular structure. It is also an immune system stimulant. Allicin is considered the active ingredient in garlic. You can increase the content of allicin in garlic by crushing the buds and leaving them out for five minutes or more. The oxygen in the air facilitates the conversion of alliin to allicin. Take at least two cloves daily. If supplementing, take 400 to 500mg up to three times daily. You may also consider looking for supplements with a high alicin content.

Avoid foods that are high in the amino acid arginine, such as chocolate, peanuts, seeds, almonds and other nuts. The herpes virus requires the manufacture of proteins rich in arginine and arginine itself is suggested to be a stimulator of the herpes virus replication. You may want to increase lysine rich foods in the diet. Good sources of lysine are most vegetables, legumes, fish, turkey, and chicken.

{tab=- Herbs -}

Kelp is very high in essential vitamins and minerals. Take 1,000 to 1,500mg daily.

Alfalfa is a good source of vitamin K, which is necessary for healing and tends to become depleted by antibiotics. Sprouts can be put on anything from sandwiches, to soups, to drinks. To prepare an infusion, add 1 teaspoon to 1 cup boiling water and allow to infuse 5 to 10 minutes.

Echinacea, goldenseal, pau d'arco, and suma may also alleviate symptoms. You may want to alternate among two or more of these herbs to maximize effectiveness. Consume 3 cups of herbal tea daily or take as directed on the label. NOTE: Do not take goldenseal internally on a daily basis for longer than 7 consecutive days or use during pregnancy. Avoid it entirely if you are allergic to ragweed.

Certain remedies can be used in acute situations if your symptoms fit the symptom picture of the remedy. For dosages, see the dedicated section on Homeopathy. Consult your homeopath or naturopath to determine your constitutional remedy: the remedy that best fits you as a whole person. Use latex condoms for any sexual activity until the infection has cleared completely. These diseases are highly contagious. In fact, before there are any visible signs there exists the risk of contagion so it may be best to protect yourself or others by using the barrier method. Be aware, however, that condoms do not guarantee protection against STD's and abstinence is the only way to avoid any risk of transmitting the infection.

{tab=- Minerals -}

Zinc is important for the health of the reproductive organs and immune system. The mineral also promotes wound healing and boosts immune function to fight a broad range of disease-causing microorganisms. Raw pumpkin seeds are an excellent source of zinc. Other sources include mushrooms, seafood, spinach, sunflower seeds, whole grains, soy beans and legumes, lamb chops, pork loin, chicken, eggs, milk, fish and liver. If supplementing, take 30 to 50mg daily with meals. Do not exceed 100mg daily from all sources.

{tab=- Miscellaneous -}

Acidophilus and bifidus are essential in re-establishing the normal flora or the "friendly bacteria" when the balance has been disrupted by genital candidiasis or antibiotics, which are usually prescribed for STD's. It is essential that these bacteria be restored to the body, particularly after the use of antibiotics. Look for a dairy-free formulation with at least 2.5 billion viable cultures per capsule and keep refrigerated. Take 2 or 3 capsules daily before meals, preferably in the morning. Supplements with Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) provide a beneficial "bed" and initial food source for the bacteria. If dairy allergies have been ruled out, you can also eat yogurt that has had either bacterial culture added.

Raw thymus glandular is rich in biologically active molecules necessary for the proper function of the thymus gland, thereby enhancing immune system function. The thymus gland plays an important role in developing immunities against disease. Take as directed on the label.

Colloidal silver is an antiseptic that rapidly reduces inflammation and promotes healing of lesions. A variety of companies suspend varying amounts of silver in solution; anywhere from 5 parts per million (ppm) to 30 ppm. Read the label before using. Colloidal silver should be taken on an empty stomach thirty minutes before a meal. A number of preparations suggest varying amounts of solution to be taken. Again, read the label for direction. Some sources maintain that it is best to place the solution under the tongue for optimal absorption if taking internally. Colloidal silver can also be found as a nasal spray to be inhaled, or a salve for topical application.

B-Complex is necessary in all cellular enzyme system functions. Take 50mg three times daily.

Vitamin C boosts immune function and is considered an anti-viral agent. Take 750 to 2,500mg four times daily. Start at the lower dosage and increase up to bowel tolerance.
